So yeah, that version of Dolphin is called PrimeHack. Metroid Prime 1 is a bit simpler than the later two, which do seem to have a few more performance issues, generally, but it's not that big of a difference and is easily fixable. I’d say that yes you do need a Sensor Bar, most of the games I’ve played have made use of being able to point at certain objects in game (the one exception is Mario Kart Wii).
